On our trips, the slowest person sets the pace. Along with another rule is that the person in front always must see the person behind them, makes it such that the group stays fairly together. Even on well marked trails this helps prevent the lead person from taking one fork in the trail whilst another takes a different fork. But especially when we are going cross country. And cross country is how you get away from the crowds.
