When I began, years ago, I had synthetic filler for my sleeping bag and a external framed Jansport pack. I enjoy Jansport and have worn out 2 packs. However, I am now a fan of internal frame packs and of down sleeping bags. Even here in the Northwest with the rain, I find it worthwhile to have the lightness, compactability, and warmth of a down bag.
Part of planning a trip is to plan your pack. Where does the "kitchen" go, the "bedroom", the "entertainment", "essentials" .. etc.
